The rolling hills of Glynneath are a world away from the famed Hollywood hills where the Welsh girlfriend of David Hasselhoff currently resides.Hayley Roberts and her world-famous beau are the subject of a brand-new BBC Wales documentary – Hayley and the Hoff – which follows the couple on their charmed life in the UK and in LA, where they now live. It’s the first time that Hayley, a former shop assistant from the town in Neath Port Talbot, has let the cameras into the life she and her partner, former star of Baywatch and Knight Rider Hasselhoff, share.
She says: “I hate watching myself, so David has watched it and I stayed in the other room, but I could hear myself.
“When he watched it again, I went in and saw a glimpse of myself and I thought, ‘Do I really look like that?
’” The couple’s four-year relationship, which blossomed after the pair met in Cardiff when the star was a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, has been a subject of interest since its surreal inception.
Hayley explains: “The BBC asked me about a year before I finally agreed to do it.
At first I thought I couldn’t do it – when you’re around a camera you are not completely yourself. “But as the year went on they kept asking David and he talked with me about it and thought it might be good for people to see the real us.” The programme explores their relationship from their first meeting through to their current lives, with an exclusive look behind closed doors of the lives of one of Wales’ most intriguing couples.
The special reveals much about how Hayley’s life has changed since the fateful day she met “The Hoff”, with crews following the couple as they took in a Welsh rugby match, enjoyed a traditional Welsh Christmas and as Hayley threw an American-style baby shower for her sister.
But although the glamorous couple are clearly besotted with each other, Hayley did have reservations.
“I did enjoy doing it, and if I had the confidence it would be something I’d think about doing more. “If there is a next time, I’d love to be able to be confident on camera.
“But as soon as they put the microphones on us I started to think ‘oh my God’ and freeze because I was so nervous. Maybe the more you do it, the more you get used to it. “When I’m with David it’s fine, but when the camera is just on me I get a lot more nervous.” And it’s not just the cameras which send Hayley into a spin, though she copes very well in the show.
The 35 year-old hates flying, which throws a bit of a spanner into the works with her and David’s jet-set lifestyle, especially as their first date saw the Knight Rider star fly Hayley out to Switzerland.
“If I was in the UK and flying to Vegas for a holiday, I’d be looking forward to it for weeks.
