Months after Rory Mc Ilroy breaking up with her over the phone, Wozniacki and Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan attended a charity event together. C.-area outlets agree that the tennis player and the football player/actor are a couple so that’s proof enough for me. Caroline Wozniacki has turned the page on her relationship with Rory Mc Ilroy. Wozniacki and Mc Ilroy were one of the sports world’s biggest power couples until the golfer broke off their engagement in May 2014 just days after they sent out wedding invitations.
“Everybody was asking me questions and expecting me to say something.
I just thought it was more important for me to talk out loud once and get it over with.” Woz’s attempt to “get it over with” obviously didn’t pan out.
Such is life when two major celebrities date for a long time right in the public eye.
Mc Ilroy, 25, issued a statement on Wednesday ending his relationship with Wozniacki. Mc Ilroy and Wozniacki started dating in 2011, shortly after Mc Ilroy won the US Open, his first major, and when Wozniacki was number one in the world.
“I am so much further along in my life, and I’m so much happier now,” Wozniacki recently told the New York Post. Obviously, that relationship taught me so much and made me the person I am today, but at this point, I am like, I’ve moved on, Rory has moved on, and I am ready for the media to move on.” Mc Ilroy broke up with Wozniacki during a 10-minute phone call.
It ended a relationship that began in 2011 after the pair met at a boxing match in Germany.
The news came as a shock to Wozniacki — “it’s like someone dies right in front of you,” she said of the breakup — but she faced the situation head on.
“At that point, I didn’t really have a choice (but to speak out), because obviously Rory made it really public from the start,” Wozniacki told the Post.
He said: “There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. "The wedding invitations made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails. That was the only way I could put all my emotions and energies into that goal. I understand 100 per cent, you're married to your career. Mc Ilroy went on to become number one in the world in 2012 but they have both suffered a dip in form - Wozniacki is now number 14 in the world and Mc Ilroy is number 10.
I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.” Evert, who was 19 when engaged to Connors, said: "It doesn't surprise me. To look at two players that are in the prime of their career and are striving to be No. I was in awe that it [Mc Ilroy and Wozniacki's relationship] worked as long as it did. Friends and colleagues have spoken of their shock at the separation.
That's what it takes to be the best." Evert has since been married three times, to former British tennis player John Lloyd, downhill skier Andy Mill, with whom she had three sons, and Australian golfer Greg Norman -- all of them ending in divorce.
