You mention the strong connection with music, and obviously that’s here in the “Ain’t Your Girl” collaboration as well, but why do you think that there is such a strong, natural relationship between the type of fashion that you guys are doing and famous musicians being interested in what you are doing?I think, in general, music is one of the biggest influences on fashion. For us it was especially rap music; a lot of the roots in rap music and in female artists that have been in hip-hop.
To get some background behind the three new pieces dropped on the Dimepiece webstore today, we invited designer Madisen Sowers and marketing coordinator Jasmine Chucuan over to NEST where our chat bounced around from the ethos of the brand to the impact of music on fashion to just how this perfectly timed, three-way collaboration between OWSLA, FREELIFE, and Dimepiece came to fruition. Can we get a brief overview of the brand and what you guys stand for?
Read on for select bits of our conversation with the ladies of Dimepiece along with photos of the “Ain’t Your Girl” collection below. Since the beginning, it’s been all about girl power; everything we do is for women.
We mingle a bit with male stuff through collaborations, but it’s very much catered toward the urban, sporty, DGAF kind of girl. It’s really cool that we’re very LA based, Downtown based – that’s where a lot of our inspiration comes from, that’s where we go out — but it’s been great to see a bigger scope that has gone all over the world — into music, high fashion, backstage models wearing our stuff.
We wear oversized clothes, but it still looks hot; we wear hockey jerseys with heels. So for us it is very LA-based, that’s the core of it, but in the end it’s now become worldwide.

Peruse the Instagram feeds of female tastemakers like Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, or Ashley Benson and you’re sure to find support for Los Angeles-based women’s fashion label, Dimepiece.Since 2007, brand co-founders Ashley Jones and Laura Fama have taken genuine inspiration from their environment in Downtown LA to create a fearless fashion line in Dimepiece fusing spirited girl power with intelligently humorous, conversation-starting concepts which were almost immediately sported by A-listers in all realms of entertainment.Printable designs like “Ain’t No Wifey“, “tr EAT YOUR GIRL RIGHT“, and “Torch Your Bra” set a comical yet confident tone and message for Dimepiece that has only grown more cogent with each new drop, and most recently, Dimepiece have linked up with the boys — Skrillex, OWSLA, and FREELIFE — for a collaborative campaign to coincide with the release of Bixel Boys’ appropriately titled single and music video, “Ain’t Your Girl”, premiered today via VICE’s Creators Project.I think that’s where the focus on female hip-hop artists came from; they were really always embodying those three things. There’s a nostalgia that comes from the stuff that we make. One of the biggest influences we had back in the day was Aaliyah, and she still comes up all the time.
