As a service to the victims of sexual assault in Baltimore County, the SAFE Program at GBMC has established a comprehensive service in conjunction with the Baltimore County Police Department, the Baltimore County State Attorney's office, local universities and sexual assault counseling providers to ensure victims are treated compassionately and respectfully.
In the 2013-2014 school year, GBMC SAFE presented to over 1,100 students in Baltimore City and Baltimore County.
The Maryland Board of Nursing requires completion of the Forensic Nurse Examiner Adolescent/Adult course and subsequent clinical training to apply for certification as Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE-A).
The course provided at GBMC is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON).
By providing choices of services in a confidential, non-judgemental atmosphere, with specially trained staff at no cost to the patient - we focus on re-empowering our survivors in order to begin the healing process and, in addition, work to end Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence in our community.
The SAFE Program at GBMC is coordinated by Registered Nurses, who are specifically trained and certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
They care for victims of sexual assault, age 13 and above and collect forensic evidence to be submitted to the Baltimore County Police Department Crime Lab.SAFE nurses provide these services in a private, secure suite which is separate from the GBMC Emergency Department, once the patient has been evaluated for other injuries by the Emergency Department Physician.For more information about the preservation of crucial evidence, please view the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) website’s Aftermath of Sexual Assault: Preserving & Collecting Forensic Evidence page.Support from the Community GBMC SAFE has had exceptional support from the Greater Baltimore community.Through generous donations, we are able to provide our patients with new clothes and toiletries, should they wish to shower before they leave.Educational Opportunities The SAFE program offers educational outreach in public and private schools to teach SAFE dating and the importance of personal responsibility.
