Billinghurst pleaded guilty to assault and was given 12 months suspended for two years with programme requirements.
Vic Laffey, defending, said: “They met on an internet dating site in 2012.
“When the complainant went to the bathroom later on, the defendant burst in while she was in there and threw a glass ashtray at her, hitting her in the forehead and causing a cut.
“The defendant left then returned with a glass tumbler and used it to hit her several times on the top of the head, causing swelling.
“The defendant was shouting at her, telling her to get out of the house and he punched her several times in the face.” The victim managed to flee and went to a neighbour’s house and police were called.
A court heard the victim has since died but not because of the attack, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.
Before she passed away, she said of then-partner Billinhurst’s onslaught: “It was an unprovoked assault and I’m really upset.
